Barbara Weiss
I think of my paintings as acts of faith. Brush in hand, I lean in—listening. In the space between fear and faith, the painting emerges—color, texture, shape, image, wax, ink, oil—eventually a story is revealed, rare and ready to claim a life of its own.
My work visually interprets my internal relationships with landscape, journey, and the pentimento of layers of lived experiences. My abstract vocabulary is inspired by the rugged mountains, rivers, and open spaces of the Pacific Northwest, the vast certitude of the New Mexico desert, and other remote wilderness areas. While I am captivated by the dramatic forms of these environments, I am equally drawn to their subtler elements —intricate textures, organic patterns, and atmospheric hues. These impressions blend with personal memories and emotions, creating paintings that reflect an inner landscape rather than a literal depiction.
I am particularly intrigued by lines, shapes, textures… that interrupt or resist, creating moments of tension. These disruptions add visual depth and evoke a sense of discovery and surprise, mirroring life’s unpredictable paths. Through this approach, my work becomes an invitation—an emotional and tactile journey that explores themes of disruption, transformation, and restoration, resonating with the shared experiences of what it means to be human.
